The new design will overhaul approximately one million square feet of deteriorating concrete — an area roughly 30% larger than the KFC Yum! Center and bigger than most downtown skyscrapers.

First opened in 1973, the Belvedere public space in Louisville, Kentucky, will now undergo a vibrant restoration, set to open in 2030

The redesign, capping off more than two years of planning, aims to make it feel less like a monument and more like a neighborhood backyard.

The revamped Belvedere is to include a signature performance space with capacity to host a variety of events and activities.

Having pivoted from an initial design deemed too costly and logistically challenging to bring to life, the new approach reins in costs while aiming to offer year-round opportunities for programming.

Today, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg announced that longtime parks expert and non-profit leader Layla George will serve as Project Executive for the redesign and reimagined Belvedere. George most recently served as the President and CEO of the Olmsted Parks Conservancy, the non-profit partner to Metro Parks and Recreation in caring for and investing in the city’s 17 Olmsted-designed parks and six parkways.
